Why do i need a foundation when I have purchased a base with my greenhouse?

In short, your greenhouse will need a firm level standing for the base / integral base to stand on much like the foundations of a house, it stops subsidance and the greenhouse collapsing!

What are my options when choosing the best foundation for my greenhouse?

1. Compacted ground soil, clay, earth.

You can fix a greenhouse onto adequately compacted soil etc. Pretty much all optional base plinths come with ground spikes which attach to each corner of the base plinth which can be splayed out at the bottom and cemented into a hole using postcrete or similar to prevent the base from lifting up. We would not recommend sinking the spikes into gravel, hardcore or similar as movement can occur.

2. Perimeter foundations.

Using slabs, breeze blocks, bricks, concrete or sleepers to create a solid perimeter foundation under the greenhouse base frame is fine, this leaves the internal space free for growing. You can either build above ground level, or dig a suitable trench and fill in with your chosen material.

3. Slabs or Block Paving

This would be our advised method if you don't mind using growbags or pots, a slabbed base will last for many many years providing it is laid correctly. We can also screw the greenhouse base down to the slabs or paving to prevent movement. Again please ensure that the greenhouse will fit by checking the  manufacturers dimensions, you will need the slabs / paving to be larger than this dimension as you don't want it teetering on the edge.

4. Concrete Pad

Great if it's already there but can prove to be an expensive option. Ideal for larger buildings, it be must be as level as possible.

Can I site my greenhouse without purchasing a metal base frame?

Quite simply, YES! Please remember many greenhouses like the Halls's Popular and Vitavia Venus etc have a lip around the bottom edge, this has to be raised off the ground as it is not strong enough to hold the weight of a fully glazed greenhouse. You can create your own base frame using tanalised wood or sleepers etc but please be sure that that outside measurements of the frame match up to the manufacturers advised dimensions (these can be found using the links to the manufacturers pages that we have listed on the site) please remember the wood needs to be firm, level and not twisted!!

How do I make payment?

Payment is requested once your greenhouse has been installed and you are happy with the completed installation. We accept all major credit and debit cards as well as BACS payments and PayPal.
